Acne excoriée

Acne excoriée refers to acne that has been picked, scratched or squeezed. Many people occasionally squeeze or pick their acne, but this is discouraged because it can worsen inflammation, lead to secondary bacterial infection and cause scars.

Some people pick so extensively that examination shows no remaining inflammatory or comedonal acne lesions, only abrasions, wounds and scars. This pattern is called acne excoriée. It is more common in women and may be a sign of stress. Sometimes picking becomes a habit that is difficult to stop even when the original acne was mild. It can cause anxiety and embarrassment.

Treatment and support

Acne treatment is based on the severity of the original lesions, although more intensive treatment may sometimes be needed. Oral isotretinoin may be useful for some affected patients. Referral for psychiatric support may also be appropriate, and some people may need antidepressant treatment.
