Acne is not limited to adolescence

Acne can persist from adolescence or begin in adulthood. Relevant factors may include hormonal changes, skin-care products, some medicines and family history. Calling a breakout “hormonal acne” based on location alone is not a diagnosis.

Note what changed

Record flare patterns, any relationship with menstrual cycles, and newly started products or medicines. If you suspect a prescribed medicine, speak with its prescriber before changing or stopping it. These details can inform assessment.

Treatment should suit your health

Seek assessment for deep, painful acne or scarring. Do not self-prescribe hormonal medicines or use another person’s prescription. Mention pregnancy or pregnancy plans before treatment. Explore acne treatment options.
