Nodular acne
This is a severe, chronic form involving a combination of several acne lesions. Features can include:
- Deep, abscess-like lesions.
- Inflammation.
- Substantial damage to the skin.
- Extensive scarring.
- Clearly visible clusters of blackheads spreading over a wide area, commonly on the face, neck, trunk, upper arms and hips.
These lesions often develop from several types of inflamed comedones together. They gradually enlarge until they rupture or discharge. Pustules can lead to ulcerated areas and raised scars, including keloids. Ulcerated pustules may form crusts, while deep abscesses can leave an uneven skin surface.
Treatment
Treatment often requires repeated visits over a relatively long period. Even after symptoms have resolved, follow-up with a dermatologist is needed when there are signs that the condition may return.
